Walter D. Hail, age 74, of Somerset, Kentucky, passed from this life on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Baptist Health in Lexington.
He was born on September 22, 1943 in Lexington, Kentucky, son of the late Charles L. and Helen Phelps Hail.
Walter was a member of Ferguson Baptist Church where he currently served as a Deacon. He was the store manager for Winn Dixie from 1967 -2001. He retired in 2016 as the district manager for Houchen Industry (IGA). He enjoyed collecting antiques and spending time with his special friend and pet “Macey”.
He was preceded in death by his parents; Charles and Helen Hail, two brothers; Mark D. Hail and Charles E. Hail, and one sister; Edith Baugh.
He is survived by his wife; Carolyn Craft Hail, one son; Scott Hail (and Tammy Tatro) of Somerset, one daughter; Donna (and Shane) Fox of Orlando, Fla., one stepson; Garrett Turner (and Samantha) of Lexington, two stepdaughters; Carey (and John) Sanders of Lexington and Maquel Deckard of St. Louis, Missouri, two brothers; Bert (and Rita) Hail of Corbin and Terry Hail of Somerset, one sister; Connie Merrick of Somerset, his grandchildren; Chase (and Alisha) Hail, Courtney (and Jake) Crook, Madison Fox, Gabby Fox, Ann Marie Sanders, John Clayton Sanders, Isabelle Turner and Piper Turner, and a great-grandchild; Audrey Crook.
Visitation will be at 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 20, 2018 in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, 2018 in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Nathan Arthur and Chase Hail officiating.
Interment will be in Somerset Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made to the Pulaski County Humane Society, P.O. Box 448, 179 Chris Way, Somerset, KY. 42502.

TERRY: I AM SO SORRY FOR THE LOSS OF YOUR BROTHER, WALTER. YOU WORKED WITH DAD (C.R. “EASY MONEY” SELLARS) AT LEAR SIEGLER FOR 11 YEARS. DAD WAS A DEDICATED CUSTOMER OF WINN DIXIE FOR MANY YEARS AND WALTER WAS HIS TRUE FRIEND. I REMEMBER WHEN MY SON WAS LITTLE AND KATIE DALTON WOULD GRAB CARLOS AND SET HIM UP ON THE GROCERY BELT AND LET HIM RIDE. WALTER GOT A HUGE KICK OUT OF THAT. HE HELPED TO SPOIL HIM TOO. HANDED HIM MANY FREE CANDY BARS AND GUM AND POP AND TOLD DAD THAT WAS HIS TREAT TO A CUTE LITTLE FELLER. I WAS ONE OF WALTER’S CUSTOMERS AT BOTH OF HIS STORES FOR YEARS, AS WELL. MAY ALL YOUR MEMORIES OF YOUR BROTHER HELP GIVE YOU COMFORT AND PEACE. I’LL SURE BE PRAYING FOR CAROLYN AND THEIR FAMILY, AND THE REST OF THE FAMILY AND ALL HIS EMPLOYEES WHO MOURN HIS PASSING.
