Judy Kay (Mize) Burdine met her Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 19, 2025, after a lengthy illness, and passed to her Heavenly life while surrounded by her family. Her spirit is now free, and she has no more pain. God is good.
Judy was born on February 27, 1948, the eldest child of Paul and Frances Mize, and big sister to Jeffrey Paul and Cathy Patrice Mize. Judy was a 1966 graduate of Shopville High School and attended Somerset Community College. Judy worked at various jobs throughout her life but retired after many years of employment with General Electric at the Somerset Glass Plant, where she made lifelong friends that she counted as family. She had many interests and hobbies, and she was always taking on a project or two, but her most favorite involved gardening and arranging flowers, and she demonstrated consummate knowledge and elegance.
Judy was a lover of animals, nature, and people. She loved her friends fiercely and her family even more so. All the creatures of the earth were dear to her, and she loved and tried to protect them all. She even named the squirrels and birds that she fed every day. She had a quirky sense of humor and a powerful way with words, penning a number of children’s books that she never had the chance to publish. Judy loved a good party, was a gracious hostess, and was a fantastic cook. Her greatest desire was to be the best wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend that she could possibly be. And her church was a place of solace and joy for her. She attended Pleasant Run Baptist Church until her health kept her from doing so. A fitting favorite Bible verse of our family is found in II Timothy 4:7, which applies to Judy aptly. “I have fought the good fight. I have finished my course. I have kept the faith.”
Judy is survived by her devoted husband, David C. Burdine; daughter, Cathy S. (Burdine) Jose; a precious daughter whom she loved unwaveringly, Alice Jose; her mother, Frances Mize; her best friend and sister, Cathy Patrice Mize; her sisters from other mothers, Judy “Kip” Burdine and Aundra “Sis’ (Burdine) Whitaker; and an aunt, Delores (Mize) Whitaker. She also leaves behind to celebrate her life, several nieces and nephews whom she loved as her own. Judy was preceded in death by her father, Paul Mize, and her brother, Jeffrey Paul Mize, who passed away in infancy.
Per Judy’s wishes, no traditional services are scheduled at this time. There will be a private interment at Mill Springs National Cemetery and a Celebration of Life and Love at Pleasant Run Baptist Church when, as Judy stated, …the flowers bloom, and the world wakes up in the Spring.”
Southern Oaks Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Judy Kay (Mize) Burdine.
