In Loving Memory of James D. Fletcher Jr. June 20, 1967 – October 17, 2026 James D. Fletcher Jr. passed away on October 17, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, cherished memories, and remarkable accomplishments that will never be forgotten. James was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend.
While many will remember him for his extraordinary accomplishments on the football field, those who knew and loved him will remember the man behind the records: his love for his family, his passion for life, and the special moments he shared with those closest to him.
Born to James D. Fletcher and Anna K. Mitchell, both living, James grew up with a love for sports that would become a defining part of his life. He was a standout football player at Somerset High School, where he established a place in Briar Jumper history that few athletes could ever hope to match. After transferring from Wayne County, James played just two seasons at Somerset High School, in 1983 and 1984, but his impact was extraordinary.
During those two seasons, his teams compiled an impressive 27–2 record, finishing as KHSAA Class AA State Runners-up in 1983 and Semi-State Runners-up in 1984. James rushed for 4,152 yards on 551 carries, scored 73 touchdowns, and accumulated 456 career points. His 46 rushing touchdowns in the 1984 season remain among the greatest single-season accomplishments in Kentucky high school football history. He earned First Team All-CKC honors, All-State recognition from both the Associated Press and United Press International, and a place among the top 12 players on the All-South High School Football team, as selected by the Orlando Sentinel’s 1984 “Dixie Dozen.” His name remains etched in Somerset High School football history through numerous single-season, career, and playoff records. His accomplishments included records for rushing yards, touchdowns, points scored, and outstanding playoff performances. His determination, talent, and competitive spirit made him a legendary Briar Jumper whose records and achievements continue to be remembered. James went on to play college football for Union College and Western Kentucky University, continuing to pursue his passion for the game. Beyond football, James enjoyed traveling with his wife, cheering on the UK Wildcats, spending time at the lake, fishing, listening to music, grilling, and cooking. These simple pleasures brought him happiness, but spending time with his family was among life’s greatest blessings.
He especially treasured his role as a grandfather to his beloved granddaughter, Journey, who held a special place in his heart. In December 2019, James married his loving wife, Melissa Fletcher. Their marriage brought them a shared life filled with love, companionship, and cherished memories. Melissa survives him and will forever hold close the memories of the time they shared together.
James is also survived by his parents, James D. Fletcher and Anna K. Mitchell; his children, Domeeka Goldsberry, Gabrielle Barley, Jericah Fletcher, Schuyler Fletcher, and Jade Mounce; his stepdaughters, Kira (Conner) Davis and Elizabeth Walters; and his beloved granddaughter, Journey. He is also survived by his sisters, Tabitha Fletcher, Tryphena (Aaron) Boyd, Tammie Fletcher and Rebecca (Derrick) Fletcher-Wilson. James shared a special bond with Jason Bruce, Billy Thompson, Eric Bratcher, and Tommie Goldsberry, who were like brothers to him. Their friendship and brotherhood they shared will remain a treasured part of his legacy. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will continue to cherish his memory. James was preceded in death by his child, Basia Fletcher, his paternal grandparents Fred “Pap” Fletcher (who gave James the nickname “Boo”) and Mary Fletcher, his maternal grandparents Ed and Lena Mitchell. Although James leaves behind an extraordinary athletic legacy, his greatest legacy is the love he gave and the lives he touched. His accomplishments on the football field will forever be a testament to his talent, dedication, and determination, but the memories he created with his family and friends will live on in their hearts. James will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. His spirit, his laughter, his love for his family, and the memories he created will never be forgotten. His life made a lasting impact, and his legacy will continue through the generations who carry his memory and love forward. Forever loved. Forever remembered.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026 from 11am to 4pm in the Southern Oaks Funeral Home Chapel with a funeral service to begin at 4pm with Bro. Victor Catalino and Pastor Aaron Boyd officiating. Southern Oaks Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for James D. Fletcher Jr.
