Florence Elizabeth Smith also known to many as Flo, Momma Flo, Jo, and her most beloved names Nannie and Granny Nannie, age 85, of Somerset, passed peacefully on Friday February 7th, 2025 surrounded by her children and grandchildren. She was born on April 10, 1939 in Manchester, KY to the late Burchell and Doscia Smith. Flo was a longtime member of Oak Hill Baptist Church. She and her husband Marvin moved to Somerset from Manchester to farm. They owned and operated the first original flea market in Pulaski County which was Flo’s Flea Market for many years.
She truly enjoyed watching her grandchildren play on their various sports teams and especially enjoyed playing with her great-grandchildren at her house. She loved reading her bible, watching Sunday morning church services and cooking good old country food for her family. Her favorite hobbies included canning, growing beautiful flowers, mowing her yard, farming, gardening, collecting antiques, and traveling with her husband to flea markets, auctions, antique stores and yard sales. She loved working in their concession business at festivals and fairs making blooming onions and funnel cakes. She also loved making cotton candy for Southern Elementary fall festivals.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her husband of 61 years Marvin Spencer Smith, their daughter Rhonda Van Sanders, sisters Kriss, Dessie, Laura Lee, brothers Fate, Alton, Bert, Homer and Winford.
She will be dearly missed by one son, Marvin Russell “Rusty” (Samantha) Smith; three daughters, Sheila Kay (Steve) Bullock, April (Tony) Russell and Kari (Gary) Sewell, all of Somerset; seven grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth (Beth) Todd (Fiancé Jeff Isaacs), April Dawn Sanders, Shelbie Russell (Kendell) Brinson, Colton Russell Smith, Tiffany Starr Russell (Fiancé Zachary Turpin), Briar Jaclyn Russell (Fiancé Colin Kinser) and Chase Parmelee Sewell; four great-grandchildren, Seth Allen Todd, Ryan Elizabeth Isaacs, Bree Isaacs, Avrie Jo Brinson and one great-grandchild on the way, one sister Ruby Reed (Manchester) and many nieces and nephews. Special family friends Jennifer Latham, Rita Russell, Johnny Adams, and Joanne Sewell.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 13th 2025 in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home, from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with the funeral service to follow with Bro. Tim Reid and Bro. Matt Tucker officiating. Burial will be in Southern Oaks Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Kendell Brinson, Colton Smith, Chase Parmelee Sewell, Seth Todd, Jeff Isaacs, Zachary Turpin, and Colin Kinser.
The Smith family would like to extend a special “Thank you” to her Physical Therapist Makensie DeRossett and all the nurses and doctors at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital.
