Mr. Bobby E. Newell Sr. 87, a native of Somerset, Kentucky departed this life on Friday September 06, 2024 at Hospice of Lake Cumberland. Born October 28, 1936, he was the only child of George and Elsie (Gaines) Newell. He was a graduate of the all black Dunbar High School. He also played guard (jersey #2) for the Dunbar Trojans Basketball Team who was the first Pulaski County team to win a state championship in 53-54 which Became one of the first inductees to the Somerset High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Bobby was a U.S. Navy Petty Officer who retired with a 20 plus year career in the United States, NAVY. He went into the Navy at age 15 and half years old. His parents
Had to sign for him to go into the Navy. Bobby was on the USS Nautilus, the first Nuclear Powered Sub. He trained at the Submarine School in New London, Connecticut. He was also on the Fleet Ballistic Missile-(FBM) or the boomers as they called them. He was also on the last of the USS Pomodon for three years. The Korean War was also going on at that time.
He also avoided getting on the Submarine that was lost underneath the ice. He lost a very good Friend. He was able to travel a lot, and that’s why he went into the Navy. He has been to Panama Canal/Guam/France/and Japan where WW2 had been under attack. When ask if he
Would join the Navy all over again, “He stated yes I would because it was definitely an adventure.” After serving his Country, Bobby then worked for the United States Postal Service. Starting in San Diego, California and then moving back to Somerset, KY and continuing his employment with the USPS where he retired after 16 years of dedicated service. He also worked for the State Dept. for a few years. And after he couldn’t retire from anything else, he went out and bought a truck/trailer/ and a Zero turn lawn mower and mowed grass for several residents in the downtown Somerset area.
Preceded in death by his parents/first wife-Imogene (Richards) Newell-Six Uncles Virgil/William/Raymond/Johnnie/Charles/Bob-one daughter-Rhonda Newell-Goodwin One Daughter-n-law-Angela Newell and two grandchildren-Brandon Newell/Tiffany Second wife Barbara Ann (Foley) Newell-Step-granddaughter Jessica L. Hunter.
He is survived by three children-Denise Newell/Pam Newell/Bobby Newell Jr. w/a
host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three step-children
Rodney Stigall/Lisa Mason/Katrina Coffey w/a host of step-grandchildren as well. Two Foster children-Jeffrey Hale and Anthony Hale
Bobby was a resident of Somerwoods Nursing Home from 2018 until his death in 2024
Bobby was a member of Maple Street Baptist Church as well as Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 20, 2024 from 9am to 11am in the Chapel of the Southern Oaks Funeral Home with a funeral service to begin at 11am with Rev. Seibert Taylor officiating. Burial will follow in Mill Springs National Cemetery.
Military Honors will be conducted by American Legion Honor Guard Post #38.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Southern Oaks Funeral Home is entrusted with the arrangements for Mr. Bobby E. Newell Sr.

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans, we offer our sincere condolences at Bobby´s passing. Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We are always saddened whenever a fellow “Bubblehead” departs on Eternal Patrol. He served with honor on the USS Pomodon SS-486, USS Threadfin SS-410, USS Woodrow Wilson SSBN-624, and USS Benjamin Franklin SSBN-640.
To our “Brother-of-the-Phin” we say, “Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. Fair Winds and Following Seas.” Thank you for your service to our country.
