James A. Carty, 85, of Somerset, KY, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2024, at Laurel Heights Home For The Elderly in London, KY.
James was born July 24, 1939 in Cincinnati, OH, to the late Charles Carty and Georgia Carty Herbert.
James was raised in Girdler, KY and later moved to Cincinnati, OH, where he raised his family and worked at and retired from General Motors, Norwood. After returning to Somerset, James worked at Auto Electric as a small engine mechanic – he could fix just about anything. James helped to form the local UAW drop-in center, where he worked as a counselor. In his free time, he enjoyed his classic car and riding his Harley Davidson. He never met a stranger, and enjoyed spending        time talking and drinking coffee with his family and friends.
James was a member of White Lily Baptist Church, Somerset, where he loved attending, as long as he was able.
James is survived by his son, Monty and Anna Carty, two sisters, Carol and Jimmy Owens and Cheri and Bob Michael and two brothers-in-law, Calvin Martin and Wayne Sumpter.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Mounce Carty, whom he married on October 9,1965, who preceded him on August 19, 2019. He is also preceded by a sister, Joyce Martin.
 
Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2024 from 5 to 8pm in the Chapel of the Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 6, 2024 at 11am at the funeral home with Bro. Mark New officiating. Burial will follow in Southern Oaks Cemetery.
 
Pallbearers will be: Mark Meece, Terrell Harper, Gary Bryant, Steven Sumpter, Geoff Mounce and Mark Siler.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
