James Austin Alton, age 80, of Burnside, passed from this life on Thursday, October 20, 2016, at his residence.

Austin was born on November 1, 1935, in the Turkey Creek Community, of Wayne County, Kentucky, son of the late John C. and Keddy Hester Denney Alton.  He was a retired service attendant for Somerset Oil, a past operator of the Burnside Texaco and past employee of the Greenwood/Shamrock Coal Company.  Austin was trustee and a member of the Grave Hill Cemetery Committee, until his health began to fail.  Austin enjoyed taking care of his animals and going to the stockyards.   He was a member of Grave Hill United Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Diana Nicholas Alton; his son, Dennis (and wife, Janette) Alton, of Dixie Bend; his daughters, Debra (and husband, Jim) Stout, of Burnside, and Missi (and husband, Bro. Darry) Hatfield, of Somerset; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a host of special nieces and nephews.

Preceding Austin in death are his parents; his son, Rickey Alton; his daughter, Karen Alton Cogdill; his brothers, Jessie Alton, Kenton Alton, John Alton, Tommy Alton, Coolidge Alton, Jerry Alton and Lewis Alton; and his sisters, Zina Rose, Ora Morrow, Stella Branscum and Dora Alton.

Visitation will be Sunday, October 23, 2016, after 5:00 p.m., in Southern Oaks Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, October 24, 2016, at 11:00 a.m., in the funeral home chapel, with Bro. Darry Hatfield and Bro. Josh Wesley officiating.  Burial will be Grave Hill Cemetery, in Tateville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland and to the Grave Hill Cemetery Fund.
