Marvin Spencer Smith, age 82, of Somerset, passed peacefully from this life on Wednesday August 31st, 2016 at his home surrounded by his wife, Flo, children and grandchildren. He was born on May 2nd, 1934 in Manchester, to the late Elmer and Malvaria Stewart Smith. Marvin was a member of Oak Hill Baptist Church and a Veteran of the United States Army. He obtained a Degree in Agriculture from the University of Kentucky. He was a retired farmer and Pulaski County School Board Employee. He and his wife owned and operated Flo’s Flea Market for many years in Pulaski County.
Marvin loved fishing and watching sports. He truly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play on their various sports teams and rarely missed a game. Some of the most memorable times in his life were going on long fishing trips with his son, Rusty, and attending his grandson, Colton’s fishing tournaments. His children and grandchildren were all precious to him and the apple of his eye.
He is survived by his wife, Flo Elizabeth Smith, of 61 years; one son, Rusty (Samantha) Smith; three daughters, Sheila (Steve) Bullock, April (Tony) Russell and Kari (Gary) Sewell, all of Somerset; seven grandchildren, Sara Elizabeth (Beth) Todd (Fiancé Jeff Isaacs), April Dawn Sanders, Shelbie Russell (Kendell) Brinson, Colton Smith, Tiffany Russell, Briar Russell and Chase Parmelee Sewell; three great-grandchildren, Seth Todd, Ryan Elizabeth Isaacs and Bree Isaacs; a special niece, Melissa (Missy) Gibson.
Preceding Marvin in death are his parents, one daughter, Rhonda Smith Sanders, one brother, Jemeral Smith and one sister Vanessa Smith Hunt.
Services will be held Saturday September 3rd, 2016 at the Southern Oaks Funeral Home Chapel, with visitation from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The funeral service will follow visitation at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Allen Fisher and Brother Fitch Sewell officiating. Burial will be in the Southern Oaks Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Kentucky Army National Guard. Pallbearers will be Tony Russell, Steve Bullock, Gary Sewell, Colton Smith, Chase Parmelee Sewell, Seth Todd, Kendell Brinson, Jeff Isaacs and Joshua Phillips.
The Smith family extends a special “Thank You” to Bonnie Russell, Jennifer Latham and Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
The family requests expressions of sympathy take form of contributions to Hospice of Lake Cumberland.
