Edna Bernice Yanders Whiting was born on June 28, 1920, on her mother, Ella Mae Yanders’ 22nd birthday; her father was Chester Yanders.

Bernice, as she was called by family, passed away peacefully in the home of her beloved sister, Nina Keeney, on October 23, 2015.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Orville Spears; a second husband, Guy Whiting; and a loving late life companion, Robert Matthews; brothers, Avery Lee, Ray Earnest and Robert Baker Yanders; and sisters, Reba Prather, Nancy Taylor and Nina Keeney.

A brother, Charles, survives along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernice lived most of her adult life in Atlanta, Georgia, where she was an office employee of Dunlap Rubber and Lewis Thread, before retiring back home to Somerset. She was hardworking, whether at her job or caring for her lawn. She lived with a tenacious, self-responsible attitude; a vibrancy for life that she conducted with a special style and grace all her own.

Burial will be in the Yanders Family Cemetery.

A private family graveside ceremony will be officiated by Pastor Joe Altman, on Sunday, October 25, at 2:00 p.m.

Gifts commemorating the life of Bernice can take the form of donations to Hospice of Lake Cumberland.

Southern Oaks Funeral home is in charge of all arrangements.
