Arwana Jean Barrett, 79 of Eubank, KY formerly of Somerset, KY passed away at the Hospice of Lake Cumberland, Jean Waddle Care Center on Wednesday, May 27, 2015 after an extended illness.
She was born on February 1, 1936 in Ferguson, KY to the late James O. and Pauline Wheeler Calhoun.
Arwana discontinued her formal education to work and help her family as a teenager. During this time she gained knowledge, skills and work ethics that she instilled in her children. After Accepting Christ as her Savior, she became a “Prayer Warrior” and a mighty woman of faith and love. She united with the Church of God faith and could always be counted on the lead the Singing in her earlier years. She served as the YPW director at the Cotter Ave Church of God for several years. She was a Faithful member and supporter of the old Valley View Church of God until her health declined, but she continued to stay strong in her faith. Being a true Prayer warrior, she could be heard in the night hours, praying for her family and friends. “Mother Barrett” was the epitome of a Godly Woman in the Holiness church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James O and Pauline Wheeler Calhoun, one brother; James Wayne Calhoun, two sisters; Janice Sams and Norma Cheer, two daughters; Deborah Phillips and Sandra Guffey.
She is survived by her four beloved sons; Richard (Kathy) Metcalf of Port Orange, Fla, William “Billy” (Jackie) Barrett of Science Hill, KY., David Barrett of Somerset, KY and Mark (Gail) Barrett of Ferguson, KY. One loving Daughter and Primary Caregiver ; Cathy (Fetter, Sr.) Wilder of Eubank, KY. One Brother; Paul (Margaret) Calhoun of Bimble, Ky., and One Sister; Arlene (Robert, deceased) Whalen of Covington, KY. 22 loving Grandchildren that she loved and cherished and 20 Great-Grandchildren Several nieces, nephews and cousins and a host of Church Family and friends that she made a positive impact over the course of her life in the Church.
Visitation will be held on Friday, May 29, 2015 after 6 PM in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015 at 11:00 AM at the New Life Church of God Mtn Assembly at 222 Murphy Ave, Ferguson, KY with Pastor Eric Barnes and Pastor Doug Walden officiating.
Burial will follow the funeral Services at the Southern Oaks Cemetery.
