Mr. Carter Poynter, 88, son of the Late Henry Lee and Elsie Carter Poynter departed from this life to his heavenly home on Tuesday August 21, 2012 at the Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset, Kentucky.
Carter was born in the Elrod Community on June 20, 1924. He attended high school at Shopville, graduating in 1943. He served his country in the Army in Guam during World War II. He attained the rank of E5 and was wounded there. He received the Purple Heart medal for his service.
Upon returning from service he married Roberta Kathleen Stevens on November 1, 1946, to this union was born a daughter, Mary Jo Poynter who preceded him death. Kathleen survives him.
Other than his parents Carter was preceded in death by one brother Linzie, his wife Ruth survives; a sister in law Joyce Broyles, her husband Lee Broyles survives; sister in law, Maxine Stevens who died in infancy; two brother in laws Russell Stevens whose wife Artie Survives, Carl Stevens and his wife Mabel. He is survived by a brother in law, Ray and his wife Linda. His first wife Vivian is deceased. Also surviving is a brother in law, Charles Stevens and wife Hazel.

Carter retired from the Commonwealth Journal with 26 years of service and then spent 14 years as manager of Cumberland Appliance Center.
Carter spent many years while living in the Bobtown Community, teaching the Senior Adult Class at Bethel Baptist Church.
He was a member of the Lake Cumberland Church of the Nazarene since selling his farm and returning to Somerset to live.
Carter was a generous and kind person to everyone he met. He was always ready to help anyone he could and loved by all who knew him. He will be sorely missed by his wife of 65 years and all his many friends.
Visitation services will be Thursday August 23 at 11:00 A.M. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 P.M. with Bro. Seth Tidball officiating. All services will be conducted in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Lakeside Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Tommy Jones, Sam Price, Gary Eaton, Sherman Parkey, Mike Broyles, Ronnie Blanton and Don Eaton as an honorary pallbearer.
