Glen Whitaker, 93, of Somerset, Ky., was born on November 10, 1921 in Stab, Ky. and passed from this life on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 peacefully at home.
He was a member of Pleasant Run (Short Creek) Baptist Church where he served as music director for 40 years. He served as Corporal in the U.S. Army, Tank Driver, Co. A 736th Tank Battalion, in Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe during WWII from 1943-45. He was awarded the following decorations: Purple Heart, WWII Victory Medal, Occupation Medal, Good Conduct, American Campaign Medal, American Defense Service Medal, and the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars. He was a member of the American Legion Post 38 Honor Guard, VFW Post 269, and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 111 in Somerset. He retired from the Kingsford Company of Burnside, Ky. In 1987 after 25 years.
He was united in marriage on September 4, 1953 to his wife, Opal (Smith) Whitaker.
He is survived by his wife, as well as a son, Kenneth (and Barbara) Adams of Stab, a daughter Linda (and Jeff) Howard and a daughter-in-law, Shelia Adams of Somerset; six grandchildren: Haley (and Tim) Heter of Wichita, Ks., Rebecca Adams of Stab, Gretchen (and Scott) Kennedy, Ricky (and Wanda) Hines, Scott (and Erica) Adams of Louisville, Ky., Karen (and Shuva) Chakraborty of Dallas, Tx. and nine great-grandchildren: Tiffany Heter, Nick Heter, Thyler Heter, Ashton Adams, Paxton Moss, Avalon Moss, Amber Milburn, Amanda Milburn, and Jeremy Milburn.
Glen was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Effie (Whitson) Whitaker, and siblings: Betty Lou Freeland, Violet Rose Randolph, James Louis “J.L.” Whitaker, Londis “Pete” Whitaker, Carley Eyster; a daughter, Glennis Carol Whitaker and a son, Denver Dale Adams.
Visitation will be held on Sunday June 7, 2015 after 6pm in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday June 8, 2015 at 11am in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Ron Barnett and Bro. Harold Harris officiating.
Full Military Honors provided by the American Legion Post# 38 Honor Guard.
Burial will follow in Short Creek Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions of sympathy be made to the Short Creek Cemetery Fund and/or Mize Cemetery Fund in care of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.
