George Leonard Hughes, age 86, of Georgetown, Kentucky, passed away at his residence on Monday, August 18, 2025.
He was born on January 25, 1939, in McCreary County, Kentucky, to the late Luther and Marie Worley Hughes. George was a member and usher at Liberty Baptist Church in Georgetown. He worked as a dedicated educator and retired from the Scott County School System. George enjoyed a number of hobbies, including gardening, raising chickens, collecting antiques, and cheering on University of Kentucky sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Hughes; his sister, Irene Keith; his sister-in-law, Frances Hughes; and brothers-in-laws, Jack Reynolds and Morris “Frog” Jones. He is survived by his brothers: Ernest (Ellen) Hughes of Florence; Rufus (Betty) Hughes of Whitley City; Thurman “Buddy” (Audrey) Hughes of Bronston; and Charlie “Jr.” Hughes of Whitley City. He is also survived by his sisters: Opal Jones of Bronston; Juanita (Mack) Ledbetter of Science Hill; Norma “Boo” (Donald) Thompson of Florence; and Darlene Reynolds of Bronston.
George leaves behind many dear friends, extended family members, and former students who will remember him with love and gratitude.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Rufus Hughes and Bro. Barry Vaught officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in McCreary County. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenwood Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 160, UCB Bank, Whitley City, KY 42653. Southern Oaks Funeral Home is honored to be entrusted with the arrangements for Mr. George Leonard Hughes.
Mr Hughes was my teacher many years ago and so was his wife. They were wonderful people. I would drive by his house on Broadway and blow the horn when he would setting outside.
Mr. Hughes was my favorite teacher in school. He made history fun to learn.
He was one of a kind. He was not only a former teacher but a friend that always had time and loved to catch up whenever you saw him . His smile and laughter will be missed by many.
Sorry to hear. I had Mr. Hughes in 7th grade at Scott County Middle School. My baby brother had him also as well as our mom had him in high school. Some folks didn’t like him but I did…that age is very hard and he helped me learn to laugh at myself and get through a tough age. I also had his wife as an English teacher in high-school.

I only called himMr. Hughes when I was in school., although I never had him for a teacher. He was a good friend of our family. Him and Miss Dottie went to the same church we did. I loved when they would sing. He played a beautiful piano & had a beautiful voice
He was a good man with a heart of gold hard to believe that they both are gone now as sad as it is I know that they’re both in a better place and now they are together forever! Rest in peace, Mr. Hughes! You will be missed!

I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. I didn’t know Mr Hughes but I know his sister Norma. If he was anything like her then the world just loss a wonderful person. Heaven has gained a beautiful angel.

He and Dottie always had a smile and him a joke. He was a fun teacher and very kind.
Such a kind person , an awesome history teacher and a great singer. I’ll never forget him singing “Chantilly Lace” to our class and at school musicals. We loved it. He also was a huge fan of Farrah Faucet back when she was a Hollywood superstar. In later years I always enjoyed bumping into him around town or honking at him as he walked up South Broadway. He leaves a lot of nice memories and many wonderful laughs. RIP
I am sad to see this. He was one of my most favorite teachers! I was fortunate enough to have him for history and social studies and Mrs Hughes for English. I loved them both! They both made a post impact on my high school years. They always remembered me when I ran into them in town. Two of the most unique people that I am glad I will spend eternity with.
I was sad to learn of not only the death of Len Hughes, but that of his wife, Dottie. I had both of them as teachers in high school in the late ’60s, him for US History and her for English. I enjoyed them both, but Mr. Hughes had a much greater influence on my life at that time, as did a couple of other teachers at the high school. My family went through a difficult time when my younger brother died unexpectedly and he and others were very helpful in returning my focus to my studies as a way to get back to living. I never forgot that. I eventually moved far away but tried to stay in touch with him every few years and enjoyed talking with him and Dottie very much. They were always really friendly and treated me and the rest of my family as a part of their own. They will be missed.
