George Leonard Hughes, age 86, of Georgetown, Kentucky, passed away at his residence on Monday, August 18, 2025.
He was born on January 25, 1939, in McCreary County, Kentucky, to the late Luther and Marie Worley Hughes. George was a member and usher at Liberty Baptist Church in Georgetown. He worked as a dedicated educator and retired from the Scott County School System. George enjoyed a number of hobbies, including gardening, raising chickens, collecting antiques, and cheering on University of Kentucky sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Dorothy “Dottie” Hughes; his sister, Irene Keith; his sister-in-law, Frances Hughes; and brothers-in-laws, Jack Reynolds and Morris “Frog” Jones. He is survived by his brothers: Ernest (Ellen) Hughes of Florence; Rufus (Betty) Hughes of Whitley City; Thurman “Buddy” (Audrey) Hughes of Bronston; and Charlie “Jr.” Hughes of Whitley City. He is also survived by his sisters: Opal Jones of Bronston; Juanita (Mack) Ledbetter of Science Hill; Norma “Boo” (Donald) Thompson of Florence; and Darlene Reynolds of Bronston.
George leaves behind many dear friends, extended family members, and former students who will remember him with love and gratitude.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 22, 2025, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Rufus Hughes and Bro. Barry Vaught officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in McCreary County. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Greenwood Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 160, UCB Bank, Whitley City, KY 42653.
