Eugene Mitchell Age 83 of the Slate branch Community passed away Wednesday August 14, 2013 at his residence.
He was born September 27, 1929 in the Pole Bridge Community of Nancy, Ky. to the late Grayson “Pete” and Wanda Fitzgerald Mitchell.
He was a member of Slate Branch Baptist Church where he was an active member. Serving as a Deacon and former Treasurer, and served on the building committee. He was a member of the Russell Masonic Lodge #284 and a Mason for over 50 years. He retired as Supervisor of Maintenance of 34 years with the Corps of Engineers. Eugene enjoyed gardening, bee keeping, fishing and orchard growing.
He is preceded in death by his parents. Three brothers, Luther Mitchell , Norton Mitchell and Russell Mitchell and a sister, Lula Bell Mayfield.
He is survived by his beloved wife Sylvia Randolph Mitchell, whom he married August 19, 1949. To this union they were blessed with one son, Ronnie (Carolyn) Mitchell of Somerset, Ky. Five grandchildren, Kevin (Malynda) Mitchell, Kelly Mitchell, Kasey Compton, Kolton Mitchell and Kyra Mitchell and one great-grandchild, Maime Compton. Also survived by three brothers, James (Beverly) Mitchell of Somerset, Ky., Roy (Brenda) Mitchell of Slate Branch Community and Brent Wayne (Carrie) Mitchell of Paletine, Illinois. Four sisters, Inez Jones of Haggertown, MD., Lela Mae (Bill) Meyers of Slate Branch Community, Roberta (Bro. Elmo) Mounce of Somerset, Ky. and Elsie Roberts of Slate Branch Community. Also survived by a special aunt, Wilma Girdler of Slate Branch Community.
Visitation will be held Friday August 16, 2013 from 5pm-9pm in Chapel A of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.
The Russell Masonic Lodge Number 284 will conduct Masonic Rights Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Chapel A of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday August 17, 2013 at 11am in Chapel A of Southern Oaks Funeral Home with Bro. Bill Dawson, Bro. Gary Wheeldon and Bro. Eddie West officiating.
Burial will follow in the Floyd Family Cemetery in the Slate Branch Community.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Slate Branch Baptist Church Youth Group.
