Charles V. Hughes, age 93, of Somerset, passed away from this life on Saturday, March 18, 2017 at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital after a brief illness. He is the widower of Stella Thompson Hughes.

Charles was born on January 6, 1924 in Hazard, Kentucky to the late Dave J. and Cassie Walker Hughes.  He was a 1946 graduate of the University of Kentucky where he earned his Civil Engineering Degree. He served as a Private in the United States Army during World War II.  In his leisure he enjoyed collecting guns, and knives, spending time at the lake and outdoors, as well as working crossword puzzles. His constant companion was his dog; “Daego”. Charles was an enthusiastic UK Basketball fan and was of the Baptist Faith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; Stella Thompson Hughes and a brother; Roy Hughes.

He is survived by three sons; Jimmy Darrell Combs, Charles Darrell Combs and Jimmy Terrell (Tonya) Combs all of Somerset. Five grandchildren; Logan, Gavin, Brandon, Memphis and Jenna Combs and one great-grandchild; Jordan Combs.

Masonic Services will be conducted by Burnside Masonic Lodge #634 held on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post # 38 on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. at Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Kentucky

Southern Oaks Funeral Home is entrusted with the final arrangements for Mr. Hughes.
