Kathy Girdler Thayer age 61, passed away on July 2, 2014 at her residence. She was born on January 7, 1953 in Somerset, Ky. Kathy retired from Oakwood Training Center in Somerset, Ky. after thirty-one years of service. Her career involved caring for the developmentally challenged and she loved her job as a residential training specialist. She would help people find their independence and importance. She also loved animals and children. She was a member of Slate Branch Baptist Church. She was also a Kentucky Colonel.

Kathy was a wonderful person. She was a light for the people lost in this dark world. She would reach to even the most lost souls and offer kind words and assistance however needed. She had a laugh that would mend any sorrowful situation. She was always available to help when someone needed assistance. She was a splendid mother and wife. She was an amazing, brave, kind and brilliant woman. She has been a positive influence for so many people. We will miss her every single day of our lives.

She is preceded in death by her father, Velasco Girdler and her sister, Mary Alice Hamilton.

She is survived by her husband, Rodney Thayer of Somerset, Ky. and her mother, Norma Girdler of Somerset, Ky. Children, Daniel (and Kendra) Hawk of Somerset, Ky.; David “Red” (and Ashley) Hawk of Science Hill, Ky.; Katey (and Joshua) Whitt of Burnside, Ky. and Kyle Hawk of Somerset, Ky. Step Sons, Jason (and Kimberly) Thayer of Somerset, Ky.; Dr. Scott Thayer of Pittsburgh, Pa. and Dr. Wesley (and Sheila) Thayer of Nashville, Tn. Siblings, Gary Allen (and Trish) Hines of Toledo, Oh.; Brenda (and Gary) Taylor of Somerset, Ky.; Ann (and Doyle) Turner of Somerset, Ky.; Janie Dungan of Somerset, Ky. and Bobbie Jo (and James) Helton of Greenwood, Ky. Grandchildren, Emma Hawk, Alli Hawk, Benjamin Thayer, William Thayer, Shelby Thayer, Matthew Thayer, Emily Thayer, Jacob Thayer and Eli Thayer. Kathy also has numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Visitation will be held on Sunday July 6, 2014 after 5pm in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Funeral Services will be held on Monday July 7, 2014 at 2pm in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in the Slate Branch Baptist Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Hospice of Lake Cumberland or the Pulaski Co. Alzheimer’s Center.
